Clean Our Plate Project 15.0

Project Overview

The Clean Our Plate Project 15.0 was an initiative by AIESEC in Johor Bahru aimed at reducing food waste among Malaysian youth by cultivating responsible consumption habits. As part of the organizing committee focusing on Finance, Legalities, and Logistics, I played a key role in coordinating donations and distribution efforts.

Objectives

The project aligned with the United Nations’ goal of cutting food waste by 50% by 2030, with specific objectives to:

  1. Raise awareness about food waste issues in Malaysia
  2. Educate young people about responsible food consumption
  3. Coordinate food donation drives for underprivileged communities
  4. Create sustainable practices for reducing waste in daily life

My Responsibilities

As a member of the Finance, Legalities and Logistics team, I was responsible for:

  • Managing financial transactions and donation tracking
  • Ensuring compliance with local regulations for food collection and distribution
  • Coordinating logistics for food package preparation and delivery
  • Documenting the impact through comprehensive reporting

Home Composting Challenge

Household composting was our national initiative to turn responsible consumption into daily habit. Over a four‑week challenge, our volunteers collected 30.85 kg of food waste (plus browns and soil) and successfully transformed it into 56.89 kg of rich compost.

Food Donation Drive

Amidst the COVID‑19 pandemic, underprivileged communities faced severe food shortages. Partnering with 448 Foodbank JB, we set up a drive at Sutera Mall—our volunteers packed 56 donation packages (beehoon, flour, instant noodles) and ensured 150 B40 families received essential meals.

World’s Largest Lesson

The World’s Largest Lesson brings the UN Sustainable Development Goals into classrooms. To engage young minds, our team created slide decks, Kahoot quizzes, and hands‑on activities covering food waste, mental health, environment, and employability. Four sessions later, 73 students had learned how they can make a positive impact.

Skills Developed

This experience helped me develop several key skills:

  • Project management in a non-profit setting
  • Financial tracking and budget allocation
  • Stakeholder communication and management
  • Logistical planning for large-scale initiatives
  • Team collaboration across different functional areas

Reflection

Six months into my AIESEC journey, I’ve sharpened my project‑management skills and learned to collaborate with teammates of all ages. While working on these initiatives wasn’t always easy, it showed me how clear communication and small, everyday actions—like composting or donating—can advance SDG 12. I’m proud of what we achieved and energized for what comes next.
